Orthodontics

A misaligned smile has consequences ranging from poor self-esteem to difficulty chewing. Fortunately, effective orthodontic treatment can help patients overcome those obstacles.
Orthodontic treatment can address a variety of problems with the smile, and different treatment options are available to help patients achieve their smile goals.
If you have crooked teeth, a malocclusion or any other issue that can be addressed by orthodontic treatment, come to our office for a consultation and learn what results we can achieve in your case.

Conditions That Can Be Addressed With Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment applies forces to the teeth in order to break down the bone that holds the teeth in place and allow them to move into the correct positions. Then the bone regenerates to keep the teeth in the right location.
The following conditions can be addressed by orthodontic treatment:
  • Crooked teeth
  • Crowded teeth
  • Excessive space/gaps between teeth
  • Malocclusions (misaligned jaws, such as overbites, underbites or open bites)
Because orthodontics can target the positioning of the jaws as well as the teeth, this treatment can give relief to patients who suffer from temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders that cause discomfort and other problematic symptoms.

Orthodontic Treatment Options

At Belmont Dental, we offer traditional orthodontic appliances (braces) and Smart Moves clear aligners. Although the different systems achieve the same end goal, they get there in very different ways.
Standard braces use brackets and wires to move the teeth. The brackets are bonded to the patient’s teeth, and the wires are threaded through the brackets. Traditional orthodontic treatments also may involve elastics to achieve the desired tooth movement.
The archwires work in concert with the brackets to apply forces to the teeth. Every few weeks, you visit the dentist to have the archwires adjusted or switched according to the treatment plan.
With Smart Moves, the desired tooth movement is produced by a series of clear plastic trays rather than brackets and wires. The trays can be removed at mealtime or for oral hygiene activity. Furthermore, the trays do not obscure the teeth as standard braces do.
Whether you choose standard braces or Smart Moves, you will need to wear a retainer after active treatment is completed to prevent relapse in which your teeth slowly shift to their original positions. At first, you’ll wear the retainer all day, but eventually, you can cut back to wearing it during sleep.

Considerations For Treatment Planning

The different treatment methods may be more or less suitable in different circumstances. For example, highly complex issues involving both the teeth and the jaws may respond better to traditional braces. However, Smart Moves can also be effective in some complex cases.
At your consultation, your dentist will evaluate your smile and take photos, x-rays, and dental impressions in order to plan for treatment. You’ll learn which treatment method is recommended in your case and what to expect from treatment.

The Many Benefits Of A Straighter Smile

A straighter smile is a more attractive one, and while this outcome is the primary motivation for many patients seeking orthodontic treatment, it’s far from the only benefit.
Misaligned teeth and jaws aren’t as effective and efficient at chewing, and this can strain the muscles and other structures of the jaw and result in discomfort. Effective orthodontic treatment can remedy this symptom.
Additionally, straight teeth are easier to keep clean. It’s less likely that plaque and bacteria will collect between properly aligned teeth, while crowded teeth may be susceptible to plaque accumulation. Properly aligned teeth and jaws also are less likely to cause injuries to the soft oral tissues.

FAQs about Orthodontics:
1. What is the average cost of Smart Moves clear braces for adults?
The cost of Smart Moves is individualized based on the patient’s unique case. We can provide you with an estimate of costs, as well as details about in-house financing, at your evaluation.

2. Are Smart Moves clear braces right for me?
Smart Moves can produce the targeted movement of teeth to correct various problems, ranging from crowding to malocclusions. Many patients will be able to take advantage of this treatment method, but in some cases, traditional braces may be preferable. Your dentist can give you more guidance at your evaluation.
It’s also important to consider the amount of the responsibility that the patient takes on with Smart Moves. You must closely follow the dentist’s directions about how long to wear the aligners and when to switch to the next set of trays.

3. How long is the treatment?
The length of treatment will depend on the treatment approach used and the complexity of your case. Smart Moves can resolve minor alignment issues within several months in some cases, while conventional braces used to treat severe crowding or malocclusions can take 18 months or more.

Your dentist can give you a better idea of what to expect after evaluating your case.
